Henri Le Sidaner - Snow [1915]
![Henri Le Sidaner - Snow [1915]](http://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49063475911_ac5342c09d_b.jpg)
This work depicts Pont-Aven, a Brittany milling town popular with artists such as Paul Gauguin, Emile Bernard and Paul Sérusier. Apart from the metropolises of Paris and London, Le Sidaner was attracted to the atmospheric small towns in Normandy, Brittany, and the Côte d'Azur, whose old buildings and architecture were even then being slowly threatened with extinction. He often depicted these magical old towns in twilight, masterfully capturing the atmosphere of the fading evening light, in which the gaslights in windows and forms on the stones seem to shimmer and dissolve.

Ling Jian (born Shandong, 1963) is a contemporary Chinese painter best known for his portraits of Asian women in surreal, sexualised environments. Reminiscent of the polished works of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Ling's stylised paintings address issues of identity and female beauty within Chinese society.

Charles Edward Perugini (Naples, 1829 - London, 1918) was born in an anglophile Italian family in Naples and moved to England while he was eight. In 1874, Perugini married Kate Dickens, daughter of the novelist Charles Dickens and widow of the painter Charles Collins, a close friend of the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and younger brother of the novelist Wilkie Collins. The title cites lines from Alfred Tennyson’s poem Break, Break, Break that were popularly used for obituaries.

René Magritte - Composition on a Sea Shore [1935-36]
![René Magritte - Composition on a Sea Shore [1935-36]](http://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49088374138_162d554940_b.jpg)
A curtain-like sheet of corrugated metal interspersed with spherical bells leans against a picture-within-a-picture, one of the artist’s signature motifs, which shows a dramatic, stormy sunset seascape that contrasts with the vista behind. Completing this trio is an amorphous, flesh-coloured column or pillar. While this object is similar to the bilboquets that populate many of Magritte’s paintings, its distinctive forms seem to have been eroded and softened, with the upper half forming what could be regarded as the silhouette of a woman. As such, this object is completely unique within the artist’s oeuvre. Aside from this enigmatic piece, all of the other objects, and indeed the setting in which they are placed, reoccur in various iterations time and time again in Magritte’s brilliant and bizarre artistic universe; their strange juxtaposition serving to playfully disrupt our notion of reality and expand the boundaries of perception.
