Jean-François Millet - Starry Night [c.1850-65]
Jean-François Millet may have painted this work shortly after he moved to Barbizon, an artists’ colony south of Paris, in 1849. Retouched by the artist some fifteen years later, Starry Night is one of Millet’s most dramatic experiments in nocturnal landscape. The composition and evocative light effects bring to mind Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting of the same title. Van Gogh may have been influenced by this painting, which he could have seen in Paris between 1873 and 1875; his admiration of Millet’s work is well known.

David Alvarado - Self-Affirmation [2018]
David Alvarado is a classically trained figurative artist based in the Los Angeles area. Creating images of the natural and imaginative world, his work allows him to constantly explore new places in a time-tried technique, inviting the viewer to see nature in diverse ways. David's primary focus lies in the figure where he strives to use a high level of craftsmanship and imbue his work with a poetic contemporary feel. David has been influenced by the Academic Impressionist and Symbolist of the 19th century but also holds a deep admiration for the masters of the 17th century.

Marc Chagall - Rain (La Pluie) [1911]
Marc Chagall’s early work is characterised by a neo-primitive style derived primarily from Russian icons and folk art. When he moved from Russia to Paris in the summer of 1910, the artist took with him several of these paintings depicting the life and customs of his native Vitebsk. During the next year he reworked them and also painted new compositions with similar motifs, infused with nostalgia for his homeland, but now adapted according to techniques and concepts he acquired from exposure to current French art. Non-descriptive, saturated colour is used in Rain in combination with assertive areas of white and black to produce a highly ornamental and vivid surface. The breaking up of some areas of the composition into shaded planes, for example the roof of the house and the left foreground, has its source in Cubism, though this device is handled somewhat randomly.

Gustave Corbet - Painter’s Studio [1855]
This enormous work is without doubt Courbet's most mysterious composition. However, he provides several clues to its interpretation: "It's the whole world coming to me to be painted", he declared, "on the right, all the shareholders, by that I mean friends, fellow workers, art lovers. On the left is the other world of everyday life, the masses, wretchedness, poverty, wealth, the exploited and the exploiters, people who make a living from death.” When faced with the rejection of his painting, intended for the 1855 Universal Exhibition, Courbet built a Pavilion of Realism at his own expense. Here, outside the official event, he organised his own exhibition, which also included A Burial at Ornans, so that his work could be available to the whole of society.

Alma Thomas - Fantastic Sunset [1970]
Paintings like Fantastic Sunset, with its solar orb glowing red like the descending sun, make the linguistic jump from shape and colour to an invocation of celestial phenomena. As someone who lived through much of the tumultuous 20th century, Alma Thomas (1891 - 1978) grew with the world and its accomplishments. Teaching art, she expanded her knowledge so that she could impart it to her students, and in her own practice, the ever-expanding field of painting allowed her an outlet for innovation, and a space in which to comment on the rapid changes that she witnessed in her every day.

Walter Greaves - James McNeill Whistler [1871]
Greaves (1846 - 1930) and his brother Harry met Whistler in 1863 when he moved to 7 Lindsey Row, only two doors away from the Greaves’s house. Nearby neighbours included Rossetti and Algernon Swinburne. The brothers soon became enthralled with the cosmopolitan American, working as his studio assistants, buying his art supplies, and preparing his canvasses and pigments. Walter and Henry Greaves had begun painting at an early age, choosing local Chelsea views as their subject matter and often working and signing their pictures together. Walter focussed on the composition and Henry’s talent was in the details.

Silvestro Lega - After Lunch (The Trellis) [1868]
The canvas was painted by Silvestro Lega (Modigliana, December 8, 1826 - Florence, September 21, 1895) in 1868 at Piagentina, the place in the hills around Florence where he had gone to live in 1861 and where many of the other Macchiaioli painters used to gather, drawn by the landscape and the possibility of painting from life. It is one of the artist’s masterpieces, in which he turns an affectionate gaze on a bourgeois and feminine world, taking it as the cue for a splendid representation of the landscape carried out in accordance with the principles of the new theory of the macchia or “blot,” with results of the highest quality.
