Picasso spent the summer of 1924 in the village of Juan-les-Pins on the Côte d'Azur. This picture is the second in a series of large Cubist still-lifes that he painted during his stay. It is a night scene; in the foreground, a fruit dish, wine bottle, and mandolin rest on a table. These items are lit strongly, as if by an artificial source. In the background, foliage is silhouetted against broad patches of black and blue. The decorative wave-like scrolls on the table’s edge may be a playful allusion to the coastal setting of the scene.

Isabel Codrington - Drowsy Summer Days

Isabel Codrington (Bydown, 1874 - Porlock, 1943) was a British artist. She painted figures in watercolour and oils and also produced miniatures. From the painter of hawkers, gypsies and peasant portraits, the sleeping nude comes as a surprise. Her model's attenuated torso, pale skin, and the cool, silken cloths and cushions on which she rests, recall the classic confections of Ingres. Codrington's intimism however, depends upon the obvious conceit that we discover her glorious odalisque asleep.

This is without doubt a high point in Leon De Smet’s oeuvre, effectively expressing the tranquil poetry that is the feature of his work. Here one notes the refined range of colours, the impressionistic touch and the well-balanced composition with which the artist creates an atmospheric rendering of space and light.

Bourdon (French, 1616 - 1671) produced the majority of his small naturalistic scenes during his visit to Italy from 1634-7, where he was influenced by the genre paintings of the followers of Pieter van Laer, known as the Bamboccianti. On his return to Paris in 1637 he continued to paint in the Bamboccianti style, but adapted his work to Parisian tastes by using brighter colours than he had in Italy. Around twenty of these genre paintings survive from the years following his return to Paris, including this one. Parallels can be drawn with the work of the Le Nain brothers who were active in France during the first half of the seventeenth century and were well known for their scenes of peasant life.

Eduard Adolf Daelen - Leisure Time in the Malkastenpark, Düsseldorf

Eduard Daelen (Hörde, 1848 - Düsseldorf, 1923) entered the art academy of Düsseldorf in 1868, followed by the Berlin Art Academy and the München Art Academy. After a short stay in Rome, Daelen returned to Düsseldorf where he became a member of the Malkasten artist society. The Malkasten artist society organised weekly meetings accompanied by art viewings and lectures about fine arts, literature and music, and grand annual venues, which quickly brought about national fame within the art world. The garden of the Malkasten art society became nationally famous for its exuberant, imaginative garden parties and its lavish tableaux vivants. This work was painted in these particular gardens and is truly a great masterpiece in the artist's oeuvre. Depicted is a group of gentlemen enjoying an afternoon drink underneath the shade of the trees, the bright colours in combination with the beautifully rendered details give an impression of the art society’s atmosphere.

The South Sea Bubble was a brief period of wild financial speculation in Britain. It was centred on the fortunes of the South Sea Company, which supplied slaves to plantations in Central and South America. Aristocrats and leading politicians were shareholders, which gave a legitimacy to the company and its slave trading activities. The shares were extremely popular and rose rapidly in value. Many other companies, some fraudulent, issued stock. When the stock market collapsed in 1720 a large number of people were financially ruined.

Ramon Martí Alsina (Barcelona. August 10, 1826 - Barcelona, December 21, 1894) was a Spanish painter. During the 1870s, his work entered what was perhaps his most creative phase while his personal life was touched by tragedy. In 1872, his son and daughter both died within a few days of each other and he lost his wife in 1878. At the same time, he went heavily into debt. This forced him to increase his artistic output, almost to the point of creating on an assembly line. He briefly had seven separate workshops open to accommodate his works in progress. Most of them were largely produced by his employees, and only the finishing touches were provided by the artist himself. Over 4,000 paintings from this period bear his signature. Eventually, in 1889, he was able to remarry, but economic problems hounded him for the rest of his life.

In 1874, Monet settled in Argenteuil. There, in the garden of his house, he found inspiration for many paintings such as Two Women among the Flowers where Monet rendered a flower bush fully integrating two female figures – the painter’s wife Camille and her friend. They are fully absorbed by the flood of flowers which fill up the entire canvas. The painter captured the topic in a given moment and of light.
