Antoine-Jean Gros - Napoleon Bonaparte Visiting the Plague-Stricken in Jaffa [1804]

The scene shows Napoleon during a striking scene which occurred in Jaffa in 1799. It was an attempt to quell unsavoury rumours after Napoleon ordered that fifty incurable plague victims in Jaffa be poisoned (without complete success) during his retreat from his Syrian expedition. A longstanding question concerning the interpretation of the painting is the significance of the number 32 on the hat of one of the patients. Since Gros, the artist, was 32 years old at the time at the composition, the shy, naked prisoner may in fact be a hidden self-portrait.

Eugène Boudin - Beaulieu, the Bay of Fourmis [1892]

Painted in the small town of Beaulieu on the French Riviera in March 1892, this canvas was shown soon after, with two other seaside views, at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Relatively unaffected by developments in painting in his time, Boudin used a conventional compositional arrangement. The French town of Beaulieu is in Provence on the Riviera, between the cities of Nice and Monte Carlo.

Léon Mathieu Cochereau - Interior of David’s Studio at the Collège des Quatre-Nations, Paris [1814-17]

A glimpse into the Paris studio of the famous painter Jacques-Louis David, this image shows 11 young men earnestly engaged in a life drawing and painting class. David stressed the importance of mastering drawing, his students, including the artist of this canvas, spent up to six hours a day sketching a live model.

Because David had supported the French Revolution of 1789, he had to retire from public life when the monarchy was restored in 1814. To avoid touchy political issues, Cochereau did not include the figure of David when he painted an image of his master’s studio for exhibition at the 1814 Paris Salon. Instead, he suggested David’s presence with the draped easel prominently placed before the window.

Cochereau was only 24 when he died at sea while on his way to Palestine. Consequently, he left few works behind. Two other versions of this painting are known, one in the Toledo Museum of Art, the other in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Edouard Manet - Monet Painting on His Studio Boat [1874]

Manet studied under Thomas Couture in Paris from 1850 to 1856. During numerous trips through Holland, Germany, Austria, Spain and Italy he studied the works of the old masters, but also showed a strong interest in the paintings of Eugène Delacroix and Gustave Courbet. After the scandals surrounding his paintings "Déjeuner sur l'herbe" and "Olympia", which were rejected from the Paris Salon of 1866, he decided to form his own exhibition the following year. This show was a great success with contemporary literati and the young Impressionists with whom Manet later was invited to the first impressionist exhibition in 1874. Manet's earlier coolly coloured paintings with their strong contrasts, strongly inspired by Velázquez, gave way after 1863 to the influence of the more two-dimensional East Asian art, as well as to the effects of plein air painting.

Edouard Manet - Luncheon in the Studio [1868]

Partially a portrait of 16-year-old Léon Leenhoff (the son of Suzanne Leenhoff before her 1863 marriage to Manet, and possibly the son of Manet or Manet's father Auguste) it is also an enigmatic work that has received limited attention within Manet's oeuvre. Critic Nan Stalnaker notes that "despite continued questions about its meaning, the work is acknowledged to be brilliantly painted and a major Manet work.”

Leenhoff is the focus of the painting, with his back to the other two people, who have at various points been identified as his mother and Manet. These identifications are now seen as incorrect; the man smoking at the table is anonymous (although he bears a resemblance to Manet), and the woman gazing toward the viewer is a servant. Nevertheless, given the uncertain status of Leenhoff's paternity, Meyers proposes that the two figures may symbolically represent Suzanne and Édouard and "their belated recognition and acceptance of Auguste's son.”

Francesco Paolo Michetti - Procession on Good Friday [1895]

Francesco Paolo Michetti (Tocco da Casauria, October 2, 1851 - Francavilla al Mare, 1929) was an Italian painter. He learned painting's rudiments from a local fresco painter. In 1868 he traveled to Naples, supported by a small grant to study at the academy there. Asserting that his temperament would benefit more from real life situations, he was allowed to return to the Abruzzo region in 1869 and continued to receive his grant. Michetti exhibited at the Paris Salons of 1872 and 1875, but he also belonged to Scuola di Resina, a group of Neapolitan painters that aimed to bring Italian art into Europe's mainstream. Abruzzo was his emotional and aesthetic inspiration. He captured its people, animals, and local events in emotionally charged paintings with luminous colors and vibrant light. After a lukewarm response to his paintings at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, he abandoned painting, sold his studio, and generally lived as a recluse.
