Alexander Millar - The Beautiful Game
Alexander Millar was born 1960, and grew up in a small mining community outside Kilmarnock on the west coast of Scotland. Millar's father worked for British Rail, and the artist's earliest memories were spent observing working men in their natural environment. Now residing in Newcastle, it is precisely this everyday routine of the working man which Millar seeks to depict in his paintings, and no more so in the present work. Through his use of light and masterful brushstrokes, we are presented with a jubilant crown of Newcastle football fans, celebrating the 'beautiful game.’ This is a scene at once reminiscent of a bygone era, yet at the same time a timeless expression of the soul of working men around the world.

Clive Branson - Selling the Daily Worker outside Projectile Engineering Works [1937]
This work shows a man and a woman, probably the artists’ wife, selling copies of the communist newspaper, Daily Worker, outside a munitions factory in Battersea where Branson was then living. The message For Unity, promoted by both sellers on their aprons, presumably refers to the communist campaign for a united front against fascism. Branson became a member of the Communist Party in 1932 and remained an active member throughout his life.

Andrea Kowch - Feast
Kowch paints in a realist style, using rural settings as metaphors for her female subjects' internal states. And as in Hitchcock's films, the scenes Kowch depicts are not what they seem; mysterious plots and backstories seem to lurk below the surface. Kowch's fictive world is both domestic and wild: rabbits nest in women's laps, quails sit in their hands, moths land on their blouses. Even when her characters are inside, the natural world intrudes. In The Feast, three women gather around a table; wind blows through the wide-open windows, while a rooster sits beside their plates, its beak reaching for their loaf of bread.
