Keith Vaughan - Interior with Nude Figures [1949]
![Keith Vaughan - Interior with Nude Figures [1949]](http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4172/34653004822_221744b0fe_b.jpg)
Interior with Nude Figures is part of a small series of paintings Vaughan (1912 - 1977) completed between 1948 and 1951 which focus on individual or small groups of nude male figures set within domestic settings. Painted in a newly sculptural manner with an austere subtle colour palette and a formal compositional arrangement, the series marked for Vaughan a move away from the neo-romantic gouaches that had occupied him for much of the 1940s, at which time he was particularly influenced by the work of Graham Sutherland and William Blake, and towards the Cubism and pictorial simplification of Post-Impressionists.

The handling of this work is distinctly animated, the strokes painted with a bold and definitive vigour. It is a joyous riot of colour, and you can sense the energy zinging from the lively, bouncing outlines of the still-life objects to the zig-zag strokes of the flowers. There is a focus on the physicality of the stroke itself, reflecting Heron’s self-confessed delight in the act of painting: ‘I have myself always believed, through a decade of spray-guns and rollers and other methods of applying paint so that it was clinically impersonal, literally dead flat in quality, in the hand-stroked, hand-scribbled, hand-scrubbed application of paint: putting paint of a flat surface with a brush is just about the greatest pleasure I know.’

In Evening Grosbeaks Set Record, Frelinghuysen’s papier collé is marked by interlocking linear forms. The collaged elements, fragmented pieces of the masthead of Audubon Magazine with the headline “Evening Grosbeaks Set Record,” are affixed to a book cover. Evening grosbeaks are big-billed finches native to North America. They originated in the Northwest, but now breed across the country to the east coast of New England. The adult males are black and yellow with a pronounced white spot in their wings and all three of these colours feature prominently in Frelinghuysen’s composition. In her choice of reference, Frelinghuysen (1912 - 1988) highlights the uniquely American quality of her adaption of European synthetic cubism.

Magnus Enckell - Youth [1897]

Magnus Enckell (Hamina, November 9, 1870 - Stockholm, November 27, 1925) was a Finnish symbolist painter. At first he painted with a subdued palette, but from 1902 onwards used increasingly bright colours. He was a leading member of the 'Septem' group of colourist painters. Enckell was homosexual, as seems indicated in some erotic portraits which were quite uninhibited for their time. As Routledge’s Who’s Who in Gay and Lesbian History puts it, "His love affairs with men have not been denied ... Enckell's naked men and boys are openly erotic and sensual.”

Peter Blake - The Venuses’ Outing to Weymouth [1994-2004]

Taking John Constable's Weymouth Bay: Bowleaze Cove and Jordon Hill as the backdrop, Blake has assembled some of the most famous Venuses in art history by the likes of Botticelli, Velazquez, Giorgione, Titian, Correggio and Lucas Cranach the Elder, parading them revelling along the beach front. In the background, a handful of cupids are playing cricket with Folly from Bronzino’s Allegory with Venus and Cupid ditching his handful of roses in favour of a cricket bat. Blake deemed the Old Masters quite resilient enough to have some fun poked at them. But the picture has an important message; the setting is not just a whimsical fantasy, Weymouth Bay was near where Constable spent his honeymoon after a difficult relationship with his future father-in-law. Here, the tour bus in the background has brought together art history’s most well-known goddesses of love for a triumphal day trip to the seaside.

Philip von Schantz (Norrköping, February 21, 1928 - Stockholm, August 12, 1998) was a Swedish artist. During the 1970s, he became very popular with the public when he made pictures of berries in large piles, as well as fruits and potatoes in old boxes and enamel buckets. His still life showed the smallest details and very lifelike representations, where "every single berry" could be counted.

Bruce Cohen is involved with the contemporary realism movement that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s in reaction to the rising popularity of abstraction. His most iconic subjects are domestic interiors that contain no people, but show signs of inhabitation: papers in disarray, an unmade bed, open windows. When his compositions feature flowers, as they frequently do, they are from his personal garden. Cohen’s style is characteristically hard-edged and crisp, with strong sources of lighting. His influences, however, are widely varied. He attributes his sense of composition and surface to the study of Indian miniature painting, but is perhaps most influenced by Dutch still life painters and the Surrealists.
