The musician, Juan Bautista Pujol (1835-1898), sits at the piano playing Gran Fantasía de Fausto, his work inspired by the opera of Charles Gounod, as is indicated in the inscription at the lower left corner. The composition is divided into two parts: the dream, which represents the musical passage in which Martha is courted by Mephistopheles and Faust is accompanied by Marguerite; and reality, in which Pujol plays the piano in the company of the painters, Agapito Francés and Lorenzo Casanova.
