As Bonington (1802 - 1828) was born in England, but received his training in France, in the Paris studio of Antoine-Jean Gros, his painting enjoys a place in the history of both British and French art. This small view near Rouen, painted from a quay on the opposite side of Seine, was probably made in the late summer or autumn of 1825, shortly after Bonington returned from a stay in London, where he had the opportunity to view the landscapes of Constable and Turner. The picture was acquired from a direct descendant of its first owner; it is impeccably preserved and still has its original frame.
