In the left background can be seen the Nativity with Saint Joseph and the Annunciation to the Shepherds. In the right background are shown the cavalcade of the three kings and their followers. The same design of the Virgin and Child was used several times, with variations, by Perugino.

Bernardino Fungai (1460 - c.1516) was baptised Bernardino Cristofano di Nicholo d'Antonio di Pietro da Fonghaia in Fungaia near Siena. He is mentioned as a pupil of Benvenuto di Giovanni in 1482. Various paintings are currently ascribed to Fungai, who appears to have been eclectic in style.

[National Gallery, London - Tempera and oil on wood, 119.4 x 118.1 cm]
