The series of Ports of France was commissioned in 1753 by the Marquis de Marigny to glorify the economic wealth of the France of Louis XV. During a long journey, Vernet, shown here in the foreground with his son and his wife, performed fifteen paintings, thirteen are deposited at the Marine Museum in Paris.
