Originally from Latvia, Grindberga (born 1965 in Riga) has been living and working in Berlin since 1990. Her painting technique relies on partial transparency and is, in a strange way, invisible. Only occasionally are traces of brush strokes discernible. The white of the base coat illuminates the delicate layer of colour above, creating a picture surface that glows with an inner force. The optical spectrum of the draughtsmanship extends from inexorable sharpness in detail to delicate soft-focus effects in shadows and backgrounds. The subtly modelled half-tones allow volumes to project three-dimensionally from the painting, and spaces to win depth.
