![Raoul Dufy - Statue with Two Washbasins (La Statue et les deux Vasques) [c.1942]](http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1677/26210403332_4a6500839d_o.jpg)
This painting displays diverse motifs that the painter, illustrator and designer Raoul Dufy enjoyed working with in the 1940s. Statues like that of the small satyr as well as the antique kraters, surrounded by meadows and with a rainbow arching over them, are typical elements in the bright elysian landscapes from Dufy's oeuvre. At the same time, the two vessels - which recall glasses for red wine on account of their dark red colour - can indeed be interpreted as bucolic elements. The composition displays a symmetrically organised picture plane that thus appears harmoniously balanced. All of the objects depicted in this pastoral scene not only reveal a certain sense for the scenic, at the same time they are to be interpreted as memento mori motifs. The painting's composition is primarily based on a linear, graphic framework. Here the artist's adept and calligraphic personal style very clearly reveals itself. The defining elements are placed side by side, on equal terms and in non-regular proportions.
