Howard Chandler Christy - Amelia Earhart [1933]

The supremely talented Howard Chandler Christy arrived in New York in 1890, to attend the Art Students League where he studied with William Merritt Chase. Later in his career, after a successful stint in book and magazine illustration, Christy specialised in painting Presidents, society's grand dames, Hollywood stars, and Army Generals. The roaring twenties brought a demand for portrait artists - many notables sought their immortality on canvas. It was at this point, that Christy turned away from illustration and moved into the field of portraiture. Among his most celebrated subjects were Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover, and past Presidents James Garfield, Martin Van Buren, and James Polk. Christy also painted such news-making celebrities as Will Rogers, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Amelia Earhart.

[Heritage Auctions - Oil on canvas, 152.4 x  101.6 cm]
