Wayne Gonzales - M - Noremac [2000]

Painter Wayne Gonzales “cracks open images we think we already know and injects them with subversive sensuality and doubt,” wrote Steel Stillman in Art in America. Culling online images as source material, Gonzales amassed a collection of assassination-related images, which culminated in a 2001 Andy Warhol-style laser-print series on the investigation of JFK’s assassination. Free-association often leads viewers to connect even Gonzales’ less contextualised work to real-life events, a testament to his knack for tapping into the American zeitgeist. For instance, his 2008 paintings of faceless crowds, though often sourced from sporting events, conjure associations with alienation, anonymity, and even war protest.
