Charles Caleb Ward was a painter, photographer, illustrator, printmaker and writer. He was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1831 and died in Rothesay, New Brunswick in 1896 where he had lived since 1882. He also lived and worked, intermittently, from 1850 to 1872 in New York City and Boston and from about 1870 to 1882 in St. George, New Brunswick.
