The opportunity to view the city from his own windows, from a fairly spacious, and highly elevated, apartment, gave the painter great advantages. In 1898, he rented an apartment across from the Tuileries, with a superb view of the garden. Its windows looked out on the Bassin of the Tuileries, which in the present painting can be seen on the left. The round Bassin was a convenient reference point for taking spatial bearings. Next to it, the pathways and vendors' stalls in the gardens provide a geometrical foundation for the composition, giving structure to such paintings focused on shimmering atmospheric effects.
