Louis Mathieu Verdilhan was born in Saint Gilles-du-Gard in 1875, though his family moved to Marseille when he was just two years old. Verdilhan began studying painting at the age of 12, initially working with artisans and decorators. At the age of 20 he left Marseille for Paris. He participated in the 1899 Exposition Universelle, helping to create a 12 metre long diorama, which can today be seen in the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club. Consequent exhibitions were held in 1902 at the Galerie Braun in Marseille (40 paintings were shown) and in 1905, a very popular exhibition in the Palais des Architectes was held. He died in 1928.
