![Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel - Poldervaart Mill (In the Month of July) [c.1889]](http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3927/15326220328_1127366dff_o.jpg)
A windmill in a polder landscape on a hot, sweltering July day. The water of the Poldervaart reflects the sky and the mill. The painter Paul Gabriel (working in Scheveningen) placed the mill in a balanced composition that exudes calm and balance. Influenced by the ideas of Impressionism, he set the scene in rapid brush strokes on the canvas. This work was acquired by the Rijksmuseum in 1889 for a thousand guilders. The purchase of this modern work was quite exceptional because the government at that time was hardly interested with contemporary art.
