The boy, with abundant curly hair, is portrayed at the age of four, wearing a child's overalls and nervously leaning back on a chair while he holds an apple in his hands. Pinazo often used is son as a pictorial motif, making scenes that very subtly capture the spontaneity and freshness of childhood. Here, the work is also an exercise in pure painting: the model is located in almost absolute darkness, with a very directed light that illuminates his face and leaves the rest of his body in shadows. The long brushstrokes, and a palette close to black, link this work by Pinazo to certain of Velasquez's characteristic techniques.
